Tour Location

This is a tailor-made safari that gives you an opportunity to track gorillas in either Uganda or DRC. 4 days – 3 nights Min: 2 Pax (seat in tour – English)

Rwanda and Uganda share a complex and often tense history, marked by periods of alliance and conflict, particularly due to the Rwandan Civil War and the 1994 genocide. Key aspects include the formation of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in Uganda in the late 1980s, the RPF's invasion of Rwanda in 1990, and the Rwandan genocide which led to mass refugee flows into Uganda. The relationship has also been influenced by the DRC conflict and the involvement of both countries in backing different rebel groups.
Early History and the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF):
  • The RPF, primarily composed of Tutsi refugees in Uganda, was formed in Kampala in 1988.
  • Many RPF members, including future President Paul Kagame, had previously served in President Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Army (NRA).
  • The RPF's stated goals included securing the repatriation of Rwandan refugees and reforming the Rwandan government, including political power sharing.
The 1990 Invasion and the Rwandan Civil War:
  • In 1990, the RPF invaded northern Rwanda, initiating the Rwandan Civil War.
  • This invasion was driven by a combination of factors, including the desire to return home and the perceived need to reform the Rwandan government.
  • The conflict was further complicated by the involvement of other armed groups, both within Rwanda and from neighboring countries, as well as the impact of the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
The 1994 Genocide and Refugee Flows:
  • The Rwandan genocide saw the mass slaughter of Tutsis and moderate Hutus, leading to a massive influx of refugees into Uganda and other neighboring countries.
  • Many Tutsi refugees sought asylum in Uganda, where they had previously served as a military force in the NRA.
  • The genocide and the subsequent refugee crisis strained the relationship between Rwanda and Uganda, as the two countries grappled with the consequences of the conflict.
The Second Congo War and Ongoing Tensions:
  • During the Second Congo War, both Uganda and Rwanda became involved in supporting different rebel groups, leading to conflicts between the two countries in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
  • These conflicts, including the Six-Day War in Kisangani in 2000, demonstrated the tensions that existed between the two countries due to their involvement in the DRC.
  • Despite these tensions, Rwanda and Uganda have also cooperated on various issues, particularly in the economic and diplomatic spheres.
