Day 1: Entebbe-Kampala

Uganda has a total area of 236,040 sq km, bordered by Kenya in the East and Tanzania in the South, Rwanda in the South west, DR Congo to the west and South Sudan to the North, making it a landlocked country. It lies at 10S to 40N Latitude and 300 to 350 East Longitude, so it is astride the Equator.1 00 N, 32 00 E. The country, however, is well watered and fertile. Although it lies at the Equator, it receives about three rainy seasons a year, with Lake Victoria, The Nile, the many forests and the Rwenzori mountains determining much of the climate. In forest ecosystems it rains regularly and weather is unpredictable. Water covers36,330 sq km, about 15% of Uganda’s area. The country is rich in wildlife, game, birds, and a vast culture of over 50 tribes occupying this beautiful, green country. In Uganda alone a birder will enjoy twelve percent of bird species in the world; a tracker will find half of the world’s gorillas; an explorer will have an opportunity to see more than 7% of the world’s mammals. For the discerning traveller the potential for Ecotourism here is enormous, and the discreet have tapped into it.

Day 5: Gorilla tracking

Go gorilla tracking (subject to availability of gorilla permits at time of booking), carrying a packed lunch. You will be accompanied by a guide and porters who will carry your shoulder pack for you. You will then set off to the thick forest in search of gorillas. The terrain can be difficult, with steep slopes covered in dense vegetation that gives the park its name. In addition, the altitude of 5200 feet and more means participants do need to be physically fit. The time taken to track the gorillas varies enormously, from as little as half an hour to as much as 7 hours before one returns to camp. Difficulty, however, is not impossibility and coming face to face with the great primates is well worth it!

Tour Location

The tour takes you to see wildlife and birds in Queen Elizabeth National Park – elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, leopard.

Uganda's history is marked by diverse early kingdoms, a British protectorate period, and a complex transition to independence and a republic. The country gained independence in 1962, initially as a constitutional monarchy, before becoming a republic in 1967. Uganda's political landscape has been shaped by periods of stability, conflict, and various governance systems, including the Movement System and the return to multi-party politics.
Early History and Kingdoms:
  • Uganda's early history involves the movement of groups of cultivators and herders, leading to diverse cultures and languages.
  • By the 19th century, the region included kingdoms like Bunyoro and Buganda, along with smaller chieftaincies and more decentralized Nilotic and Sudanic peoples to the north.
  • The Kingdom of Buganda was particularly influential, based on the shores of Lake Victoria.
British Protectorate Period:
  • In 1894, Buganda was declared a British protectorate, marking the start of British influence.
  • The British did not fully colonize Uganda but exercised political and economic control, often through indigenous proxies.
  • The Imperial British East Africa Company played a role in consolidating control over the region.
Independence and Transition to a Republic:
  • Uganda gained independence on October 9, 1962, becoming a member of the Commonwealth.
  • Milton Obote became the first prime minister.
  • The country was initially a constitutional monarchy, with King Edward Mutesa II of Buganda as president.
  • In 1967, a new constitution abolished the monarchy and declared Uganda a republic.
Post-Independence Political Developments:
  • Milton Obote's regime dominated early independent Uganda, followed by the military regime of Idi Amin.
  • After Amin's overthrow, Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Movement came to power in 1986.
  • Uganda transitioned to a multi-party democracy in 2005, after a national referendum.
Current Governance:
  • Uganda is a democracy with a president as the head of government.
  • Yoweri Museveni has been the president since 1986.
  • Kampala is the capital city.
